Look like you're actually doing something, and not blantly staring at the camera. Its more interesting when it looks like a shot from a film and not a pose.
Try looking out the window or talking to someone, puting on makeup, or quitely reading. Have something that reflects your personality in it.
Also, if you're rather good with photoshop, you can make two of you (like a clone) in one picture, which ALWAYS amazes everyone.
